Description

The Gras Co. was established in France in, or around, 1868. Its manufacturing plant was in Lille and it also had a sales office in Paris. It was, in its day, a major producer of very well made band instruments and this bass is an excellent example. Evidently, the company did not survive the Nazi invasion of France as I have not been able to find any records of saxophone manufacturing after 1941. The range is from low Bb to high Eb and it also has the bis key and has an automatic octave mechanism. I spent $1500 putting this instrument in prime playing and looking order. (Proof of expenditure will be provided to serious bidders.) The horn looks mint and plays fantastically with a most robust bottom end and excellent intonation throughout. All repair work was done by Jim Germann of Pittsburgh PA. When I asked him to comment on the basic structure and playability of the horn Jim said he was impressed with the solid construction, innovative key design and thought it played great. He thought it was made in the 30s because of its similarity to other basses made in the same period. There is, unfortunately, no case but I do have a large foam-in-place box I used for another bass and I will send it in that if the shipping costs don't make it too prohibitive for the buyer. Buyer to pay shipping costs to be determined at end of auction. (Based upon past experiences I forsee a more or less $200 shipping fee.) This is a one-of-a-kind instrument. Good luck.
