Professional Buffet Tenor Sax

  • Used Buffet Professional Tenor Sax
  • Serial Number 97816.
  • I believe that this is the current production "Professional" model that Buffet Paris offers. Although not distributed in the US because Buffet's USA Distributor only distributes Keilwerth saxophones. There is a rumor that Buffet pro sax production is actually made by Keilwerth.

    Based on the fact that this horn does not say "Made in France" or even "France" on it, that indicates that it was most likely not made in France. Also, this horn has adjustable palm key risers which is something I have only seen on German or Taiwanese made horns... and this is definitely not Taiwanese.

    The serial number does not pull up in the Buffet serial number lists that I can find, however, under Keilwerth serial numbers, this pulls up as 1992 which I believe is accurate.

    I received the following information via e-mail after posting this auction:
    Dear kesslermusic,

    Hi. Buffet stopped making their own saxes around 1982 which is when the serial number lists stop. I don't know if any Buffets were produced for awhile, but I have been in communication with Boosey & Hawkes and they have confirmed to me that saxes made since that time are indeed made by Keilwerth. The S-3 model, by the way, will have a diamond engraved on the bell with "S-3" inside. It is called the Prestige model and has a copper bell. You can see photos at their website. The "S-2" is essentially nothing more than an Evette. They did produce in the early 90's a horn model called "Expressions" but didn't think to protect the name and some Chinese company started producing a cheap, poorly made sax by that name, at which time Buffet stopped production. The Expressions, and Prestige models both have a feature which is unique I think to late model pro Buffets, and that is that the left hand palm keys are adjustable... you can change their height and angle. I had one of the "Expressions" for a short time.... beautiful horn and per Buffet spokespersons, was rouighly comparable to a Keilwerth SX-90. Best of luck with your auction. I suspect you have an Expressions.
